Carl W. Cunfer, 91, of Mansfield, OH, passed away Sunday, November 19, 2023. Born in Slatington on July 5, 1932, he was the son of the late Charles and Mary (Brobst) Cunfer. He was a graduate of the former Slatington High School, Class of 1950. Carl then served proudly as a member of the US Army from 1953-1954 and was stationed in Korea for 17 months. Carl then continued his education, graduating from Witenberg College in 1959, and Hamma School of Theology (now Trinity Seminary) in 1962. He was ordained into the Lutheran ministry and began serving as Pastor of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church Mansfield until his retirement in 1996.
An active member of his community, Carl served as associate Chaplain at Mansfield General Hospital, clocking over 5500 hours, served 6 years on the Board of Directors of Good Shepherd Home for Aging in Ashland, OH, 17 years as secretary of the Mansfield Lions Club, 15 years as treasurer of Richland Branch – Lutheran Brotherhood, 18 years as usher and ticket taker at the Renaissance Theater, and was a 35 year member of the Mansfield Men’s Graden Club.
Carl enjoyed gardening and flowers, and would often can many of his grown vegetables. In retirement, he became quite a world traveler, making 25 trips overseas, and visiting 30 different countries, and spent his winters in Florida. The Christmas season was a favorite of Carl’s. He loved to decorate and for many years would host an open house for people to enjoy the decorations.
Carl is survived by a brother, Edwin Cunfer of Doylestown, as well as many nieces, nephews, & cousins.
A funeral service will be held at 11AM on Tuesday, November 28, 2023, at Dinkey Memorial Lutheran Church, 1742 Dinkey Rd, Ashfield PA 18212. Family and friends may pay their respects from 6 to 8PM on Monday, November 27, at Harding Funeral Home, 25-27 N. Second Street, Slatington, and from 10 to 11AM Tuesday at the church. Interment to follow the service at the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to either Dinkey Memorial Lutheran Church, or St. John’s Lutheran Church, 40 S. 2nd Street, Slatington PA.
