Darlene T. Bird, 75, of Walnutport, passed peacefully away Wednesday, October 17, 2018 in her home with her family by her side. She was the wife of Robert A. Bird. Born on November 29, 1942 in Walnutport, she was the daughter of the late James C. and Rose H. (Kroboth) Rockel. After graduating from Northampton High School, Darlene and Robert were married on June 10th, 1961 and celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary this year. Most recently, Darlene was employed for Weis Food Stores in Whitehall, working in the bakery. Prior to that, she worked as a kindergarten teacher’s aid for Lehigh Township Elementary School and also worked at various garment mills throughout the area. Darlene loved gardening, quilting and spending time with friends traveling or just relaxing at home on the porch. Since being diagnosed with lymphoma herself, Darlene enjoyed knitting hats for cancer patients and helping others manage the side effects of cancer treatment.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by sons: Michael A. Bird of Walnutport, James E. Bird and wife Andrea C. of Greensboro, NC; Grandchildren: Andrew R., and Nicole J.; Sister: Kathleen M. and husband Larry C. Creyer of Walnutport; Aunt: Elsie Kroboth of Walnutport and many nieces and nephews that Darlene had special places for in her heart. She was predeceased by a son Thomas Bird.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 A.M. on Friday, November 23, 2018 at St. Nicholas Catholic church, 1152 Oak Rd, Walnutport. A calling hour will be held from 10 to 11 A.M.Arrangements are being handled by Harding Funeral Home, Slatington. In lieu of flowers, contributions can please be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis TN 38105
