Mary Heckman

July 25, 1918 — December 28, 2020

Mary Martha Heckman came into this world during the 1918 Spanish Flu Pandemic, and 102 years later, departed, as a new global pandemic rages.  Born July 25, 1918 in Slatington, PA, she was the daughter of Francis A. and Carrie L. (Benninger) Kunkle.  A life-long resident of the borough, Mary was proud of her Pennsylvania heritage.  She was a member of the Slatington HS, Class of 1938.  Baptized, confirmed, and married in St. John’s Lutheran Church, she was its oldest member.   She participated in the Altar Guild, the Jubilees and volunteered at the Second Chance Shop.   She was a member of the Slatington Senior Citizens.  In 1934 she met Arlie Heckman and celebrated 62 wonderful years of marriage until his death in 2001.  Mary was employed as a pharmacy assistant at the former Rea and Derrick Drugs (now CVS).  In retirement, she and Arlie enjoyed many trips to FL, CA and Hawaii.
Mary will be missed and lovingly remembered by her daughter Marilee, wife of Carl Oplinger of Emmaus, and her son Douglas of Slatington.  She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren, Anne Oplinger of Germantown, MD, Amy Lewerenz, wife of Tom, of Olney, MD, and Darrin Heckman, husband of Carol, Bath, PA.   She looked forward to hearing news of the activities of her beloved great grandchildren, William and Maisy Lewerenz.   She was predeceased by a brother David.
The family would like to thank Dr. Debra Cressman for her many years of wonderful care and friendship, the staff at Mrs. Bush’s PCH, Kunkletown, PA for exceptional kindness and care while Mary was a resident.  They also acknowledge Hospice of St. Luke’s who provided comfort and support to Mary and her family.
Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family.   A celebration of Life Service is planned for a later date.  In lieu of flowers, please direct contributions to the building fund of St. John’s Lutheran Church, 40 S. Second St, Slatington, PA.   Arrangements are under the care of Harding Funeral Home, Slatington.
