Roy O. “Smokey” Dengler, 91, of Emerald, passed away peacefully Sunday, May 19, 2024, in his home. He was the husband of Dolores F. (Scheffler) Dengler, whom he married June 21, 1952. Born in New Tripoli on February 8, 1933, he was the son of the late Frank and Edna (Wanamaker) Dengler. He started his career as a truck driver. Smokey then worked for Washington Township and retired as Township Supervisor after 36 years. For the last 32 years, Smokey was active with the Raad for Grundsau Lodsch Nummer 18, as both the Unnerhaaptmann and Haaptmann. He loved everything PA Dutch, especially speaking it with anyone who could understand the dialect. Smokey was also a member of the Planning Committee for Washington Township, board member for the Lehigh County Agriculture & Land Preservation, a lifetime member of the Emerald Fire Co., and a member of Ebenezer United Church of Christ, New Tripoli.
In addition to his wife Dolores, he will be lovingly remembered by his five children: Darlene and husband Hank Wise, Cindy Dengler, Diane and husband Tom Zeiser, Tom Dengler and wife Bev (Robinson), Dawn and husband Dean Remaley; grandchildren: Tom & Amy Zeiser, Christi Dengler, Cody Remaley; Great-Grandchildren: Cole & Kacey Zeiser, Autumn Remaley; siblings: Kenny Dengler, Verna Beers; many nieces & nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, Clyde, Carl & Frank Dengler.
A funeral service will be held at 11AM on Saturday, May 25, 2024, at Ebenezer United Church of Christ, 7293 Decatur St, New Tripoli Pa 18066. Family & friends may pay their respects from 10 to 11AM at church. Burial to follow at the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Smokey’s name can be made to either the church or the Emerald Fire Co., 7748 Penn St, Slatington 18080.
